Naval and Maritime
The World Wide Web Virtual Library: Naval and Maritime: Frequently Asked Questions

The top questions we are asked:
How do I get my Web site listed on the WWWVL Naval and Maritime page? Simple--just fill out our online form and send it in! We'll evaluate the site and if it meets our standards we will list it during our next revision cycle.

I submitted a site for listing and I don't see it. Why not? It could be one of several reasons: 1) the site failed to meet our standards for listing; 2) we were unable to review your site because the URL submitted did not work or your server was down; or 3) we haven't had time to get it listed yet--please be patient! If you submitted the site using our online form, you can verify the submission by checking our recent site submissions page.

Why isn't www.[your favorite site].com listed? It may have failed to meet our standards. We've already mentioned them twice, so what are our standards?  See our Standards for Page Listings for full details... Or it may be just that no one has submitted that page, or we may not have come across it in our online searches.

We also do not list specific sites when there are existing catalogs that do the job well, are timely, properly maintained, and relatively complete. Duplication of effort, particularly when someone else has clearly put a great deal of effort and thought into their work, would be foolish. We appreciate and recognize the fine work put in by the maintainers of these listings. Here are some of the sites that we list as catalogs for specific categories of sites:

Why do you still list sites that are "gone"? Because often they "come back". Sometimes the server is down, sometimes they moved the site and left no forwarding data, and sometimes someone else picks up the domain name and the link starts working again. The worst problem is sites maintained by college students (usually at .edu URLs) because they graduate and lose their account. Another problem is that we have not fully worked out a system to let folks know that their page has been listed, mostly due to time. Hopefully if folks realize that they are listed they will let us know if they move or close a site.

My buddy from high school [brother/ex-spouse/etc] is in the Navy; can you tell me where he/she is? Again, no. This is an entirely unofficial site and we have no access to official records, and unfortunately no time to research this type of information from other sources. You may be able to get information from the Navy Directory Service if the member is not overseas or assigned to a deployable ship or squadron; this does not list retired or seperated personnel. Otherwise, check out the Personnel Locator section of Navy Lifelines, or see the sci.military.naval Newsgroup FAQ section on finding shipmates and reunions.

My father [grandfather/brother/uncle] was in the Navy; can you tell me about his service? In a word, no. This is an entirely unofficial site and we have no access to official records, and  unfortunately no time to research this type of information from other sources. You may be able to get information as described in the US Navy FAQ - Locating Records of Personnel.

Can you get me my father's [grandfather's/brother's/uncle's] service record? Again, the answer is unfortunately no. As we are an unofficial site, we have no access to official records. We suggest you apply for information as as described in the US Navy FAQ - Locating Records of Personnel. Please note that, by law, records can only be released to the individual whose records they are, or if that individual is deceased, their next of kin, although it is also possible to request  the release of service records under the Freedom of Information Act.

Can you locate my [father's/grandfather's/brother's/uncle's] shipmate? No. We have no way of locating former Navy personnel. See the sci.military.naval Newsgroup FAQ section on finding shipmates and reunions.

I went to high school [church/summer camp/etc] with so-and-so, and he/she went to the Naval Academy; can you tell me where I can find him/her? No, but if you know the person's class, you can usually contact their class secretary at the class Web site. A list of the Web sites as well as class contacts can be found at the Naval Academy Alumni Association site at http://www.usna.com/Communities/ClassList.asp.

Where can I find the latest information about the U.S. Navy? A great source of official material is the Navy's All Hands magazine; see especially the Owners' and Operators' Manual, published annually in January. Also, the Navy Fact File and the Status of the Navy pages may be helpful. The annual Almanac of Seapower from the Navy League of the United States includes all of the editorial content from several hundred pages of information on the state of today's Navy. The most current unofficial news can be found at Navy Times, while current Navy press releases and newletters are at Navy News.
